What is Asphalt Made of?

Asphalt is a type of pavement made of up of aggregates and bitumen. The aggregates which are crushed stone, gravel, and sand, make up 95% of this pavement while the bitumen, which acts as a binder for the aggregates, is the last 5%.

What is asphalt used for?

Asphalt is used to create smooth surfaces for parking lots, driveways, roads, walking paths, and more. This material is also used to repair any of these surfaces.

Why is Asphalt black?

Asphalt is black because of the bitumen, which is a substance that holds the aggregates together.

What are the different types of asphalt?

The two main types of asphalt are Hot Mix and Cold Mix. Hot mix asphalt is typically laid at a temperature of 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and can only be laid on days that are above 40 degrees. This mix is known for being flexible and weather resistant as it can repel water. Hot mix is used for streets, highways, and interstates. Cold mix asphalt on the other hand is not reliant on temperature. This mix is used for pot-hole fillers or similar repairs and can be shoveled/poured without any need for special machines or applicators.

Why is asphalt hotter than concrete?

Asphalt can warm up faster than concrete because asphalt absorbs more heat than concrete. The dark, black color of asphalt absorbs more heat from the sun than the light colored concrete that will be able to reflect more heat.
