Our scope encompassed far more than traditional playground installation. We integrated equipment from Kompan, Berliner, Elephant Play, Percussion Play, Miracle, Little Tikes, and KidsTale—demonstrating our capability to work seamlessly with any manufacturer while maintaining design cohesion. The safety surfacing alone showcased our technical artistry: synthetic turf playground grass navigating complex hillside contours, custom-designed poured-in-place rubber featuring three distinct color patterns, and decomposed granite pathways winding through a specialized log maze.
The project also included Coverworx pavilions and shelters, and even indoor pickleball court coloring—illustrating the diverse capabilities that make Byrne & Jones a comprehensive partner for municipal projects.
Where Plans Meet Reality
Midway through the project, added scope introduced Kompan tower systems that hadn’t been part of the original site design. The manufacturer’s plans assumed flat surfaces, but our site featured the very slopes and elevations that made the playground unique. When we encountered conflicts between the tower footing layouts and existing concrete wall foundations, a less experienced contractor might have simply flagged the problem and waited for direction.
Instead, our certified playground safety inspectors and experienced superintendents took a proactive approach. We worked directly with Kompan and the project’s landscape architects to redesign solutions that resolved every conflict while maintaining both safety integrity and the original design vision.

As construction progressed around us, our access became increasingly limited to skid-steer equipment only. Rather than compromise on quality, we adapted our installation methods to maintain the precision required for ADA compliance across the complex terrain.

While the original timeline extended due to the added scope elements, we never rushed the critical safety and compliance aspects of the installation. Every change order from Byrne & Jones resulted from client-requested scope additions—not from project management oversights or unforeseen complications.
The transformed playground is expected to double or triple annual park attendance, successfully converting the space into a true destination for families throughout the region. Community response has been immediate and enthusiastic: “This park is amazing!” posted one community member on Facebook, while DG2 Design Landscape Architecture, the project’s landscape architects, praised our work: “You did a fantastic job constructing it! The success of Phase 2 led St. Charles County Parks to contract Byrne & Jones as the General Contractor for Phase 3, a $5.38 million expansion currently underway.
