What is a pocket park?
A Pocket park is a small outdoor space, usually no more than a quarter of an acre. Pocket Parks are most often located in urban areas and are intended not as destinations, but for use by neighbors as a place to gather, relax and enjoy the outdoors.
Pocket parks are cost-effective and provide much needed green space and tree canopy. These spaces are usually built on plots of vacant land or in place of bliughted buildings. Often, park development is initiated by local community groups.
A well-used pocket park demands a combination of accessibility, comfort and a creative use of space. Simplicity and flexibility in design allow for ease of construction and maintenance. Pocket parks often include hard scape, annual plantings, movable furtniture or water features. Understanding and charachterics of the location is important. Pocket parks can be customized to surrounding neighborhod and includes play areas, seating for events or outdoor dining and amenities for pets.
